VMS president and vocal coach Cindy Vaughan writes about the value of having a voice instructor in a recording session when tracking vocals.
Many bands come in and out of recording sessions, and I always look forward to hearing their amazing final mixes in our control room when they are complete. For some, I am invited in as vocal coach and I must say, this is always a highlight for me, especially when the vibe of the room is total collaboration!
Recently, I had the pleasure of working vocals on an album and it was done in a relaxed, fun, creative atmosphere that encouraged stellar vocal tracks. Not only did the singer create great ideas and produce a compelling tone, but everyone in the room became part of the vocal synergy and the result was amazing and beyond expectations of all of us. Singer, producer, writer, and myself as vocal coach were all focused on the same goal, but also open to each others' ideas. It was a tremendous feeling of collaboration as we wrote, directed, created harmonies, that culminated in vocal lines that not only matched the level of perfection of the instrumental tracks, but also enriched them, and lifted them to a greater level of musicianship! It was one of those transcending musical experiences where, when we heard the playback, it truly amazed us all. What a great way to spend an evening! And this is where I get to go to work!
